Pregnancy after Tubal Reversal – 5 Steps to Be Safe
Finding out what you do for pregnancy after tubal reversal is one of the things many women researching this type of surgery will want to know. Are the steps you have to take in your early pregnancy ones you can handle easily? Just keep on reading to know what steps you will need for a pregnancy after tubal reversal.
First off, as with any woman, if your period is late you will want to start with a pregnancy test. There are two types – a blood test administered at your doctor’s office and a urine test which you can take at home. Since home pregnancy tests are about 97% accurate, you will most likely want to start there.
While home pregnancy tests are very accurate, you could still get a negative indication on one. However, if you still show signs of being pregnant, try taking it again in a few days. Otherwise, you might want to get a blood test done at the doctor’s office.
Once it is confirmed you are pregnant, then the twice weekly testing begins. For these tests now, you are concerned with the HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, levels in your blood. HCG is the pregnancy hormone. Dr. Gary Berger, the foremost tubal reversal doctor in the world, recommends these tests be done every two to three days.
The important point for HCG is when it reaches 1500. That is when you will need to have an ultrasound performed. Whoever does the ultrasound should be looking for the gestational sac in the uterine cavity.
If a gestational sac is seen, you’re good to go. However, if not, you will need to do the HCG test and ultrasound again in two days. Although that may not be comfortable, there’s a chance your doctor will not see the sac until HCG reaches 2500.
A week after seeing the gestational sac another ultrasound should be done to look for the yolk sac. This just goes to further affirm the fertile egg has implanted in the uterus.
While it may seem like an awful lot of testing, the main purpose for this protocol is your safety and to protect your investment in your future. Although it doesn’t increase it by much overall, a tubal reversal does raise your chances of an ectopic pregnancy by 10%. All the testing just goes to make sure your fertilized egg is where it should be and not stuck in one of your fallopian tubes. If it is stuck, steps need to be taken as soon as they can in order to maintain the integrity and wholeness of your tube for future tries.
Beyond all of the above, if you were lucky enough to have Dr. Gary Berger of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as your tubal reversal doctor, he will want to know right away that you are pregnant. Please be sure to submit the Pregnancy Report as soon as you test positive for being pregnant. He wants to be kept up to date and is available for any questions or concerns from his patients. The Chapel Hill staff is even available seven days a week to answer your questions.
