by Jillian Kammer

Venice may be romantic, filled with art treasures and the host of a multitude of some of the finest architecture in the world, but Venice is much, much more than this.

One example among many different reasons to visit Venice is St. Mark’s Basilica. The church is a known rival of Rome’s St. Peter’s and although it’s not as large or grand, St. Mark’s is still an amazing sight that is renowned as one of the finest of its kind.

You’ll find the Campanile outside the Basilica di San Marco that served as its belltower. The place also served as a military lookout during perilous times to help keep Venice safe. Nowadays it offers more of an aesthetic purpose for those that find delight in awe inspiring sights.

Hosting both St. Mark’s Basilica and the basilica di San Marco is the Piazza. The Piazza also hosts St. Mark’s Square which is known as both a premier gathering spot and a spectacular sight all while being free from traffic noise. It houses a grand clocktower which and provides access to the Doge’s Palace, both things that help lend to Venice’s grace and charm.

Canals and gondola rides are what Venice is best known for. Whether sailing down the Grand Canal or along any of the dozens of other secondary waterways, a beautiful view is waiting.

The Rialto, among other main bridges, is found along the Grand Canal. Some of the best views of the palaces can be taken in by moving up the Grand Canal by Vaporetto or in a gondola. This vantage point cannot be found elsewhere.

The Grand Canal offers easy access to the loggia of the Ca’ d’Oro and just a short ride on a vaporetto will take you to the Palazzo Grassi. Both places are very good examples of Venetian architecture.

In other examples, a short boat ride away offers different styles of Venice such as the Villas of Venice. Beginning in the early 1700s, Villa Pisani was modeled on Versailles in Paris. A creation which is one of many by the world famous architect Palladino can be found at La Rotunda. And Villa Cornaro as well as the Villa Contatini- Camerini are housed by Padova.

Several islands can be found just outside the main city, a couple of which include Murano and Burano. Murano offers famed glass work from century old artists while Burano houses a museum dedicated to lace which have been astounding the world for centuries by craftsmen of Venice.

A master renaissance painter named Tintoretto offers a large collection of his works displayed at the Scoula Grande di San Rocca. Near by, the Gallerie dell’ Accademia offers plenty of other art masterpieces from renowned artists. Other Venice paintings, architecture and opera can be found in one spot at La Fenice.

Spending the 2 weeks before lent here will let you participate in the Carnevale which will have you going home with a souvenir mask and a smile that will last forever.
